Fenasan 2008: Sabesp to host water and sanitation trade fair August 19-21 in São Paulo – Brazil

São Paulo state water utility Sabesp’s engineers association will host the nineteenth consecutive national water and sanitation industry fair, Fenasan 2008 in the state capital from 19-21 August 2008.

So far 110 exhibitors from such sector related fields as collection systems, pipelines, water treatment and distribution, sewage treatment, environmental management, maintenance, water recycling and solid waste are scheduled to attend.

IDB showcases water and sanitation providers from Latin America at Expo Zaragoza

To highlight successful solutions to the water and sanitation problems facing low-income communities in Latin America and the Caribbean, the Inter-American Development Bank will sponsor eight participants to Expo Zaragoza 2008.  Case studies of water and sanitation initiatives in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Honduras and Uruguay will be presented. The Bank has also commissioned outside experts to write in-depth analyses of each of these case studies. The IDB sponsorships are part of the Bank’s Water and Sanitation Initiative.

IDB-sponsored presentations of particular interest are:

June 27, 2008: Carlos Eduardo de Souza Braga, Governor of the Brazilian State of Amazonas, who will describe “Igarapes de Manaus,” a water and sanitation project that emphasized social inclusion.

July 16, 2008: Marlon Lara, former mayor of Puerto Cortés, Honduras, will present “The political economy of a water and sanitation reform process.”

August 5, 2008: José Gabriel Roca Chavéz from the COSMOL cooperative in Montero, Bolivia, will present an overview of an innovative water and sanitation reform process [see related video and magazine article].

Inés Restrepo, CINARA, selected to write essay for Expo Zaragoza 2008

Inés Restrepo of CINARA, Colombia, is one of more than 15 influential authors selected to write an essay for the Water Words collection for Expo Zaragoza 2008. Her essay “Water sustainability in rural communities: advances, experiences and lessons”, focuses on Latin America. Other essays writers are former Soviet Union president Mikhail Gorbachov, Indian environmentalist Vandana Shiva and Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai.

Peru: Government shortlists 93 projects for Ibero-American water, sanitation fund

Peruvian government authorities have shortlisted 93 sanitation projects to be submitted to the Spanish Ibero-American potable water fund by the country’s housing, construction and sanitation minister Enrique Cornejo. The 93 initiatives add up to an US$80mn investment and are designed to expand potable water and sanitation services. The projects “have been prioritized under the criteria of geographic location and their regional and social impact,” said Cornejo.

IX Latin-American Workshop and Symposium on Anaerobic Digestion, 18-19 Oct 2008, Easter Island, Chile

Anaerobic digestion represents nowadays one of the most cost-effective alternatives for waste (water) treatment, which has experienced a fast development during the last three decades. This Latin-American Workshop and Symposium will offer a selected program including the latest research findings and technological applications on anaerobic wastewater treatment, solids stabilization and biogas production as a renewal energy source.

This event is addressed to researchers, waste managers, consultants, representatives of both public and private sectors, environmental engineers and other related professionals.
