The World Bank has approved a US$20 million grant and a US$20 million credit to the Nicaraguan government for the Greater Managua Water and Sanitation Project (PRASMA).
The project will provide access to water supply to an additional 150,000 people and access to improved sanitation services to an additional 120,000 people. The vast majority of beneficiaries live in very poor neighborhoods in the area of Greater Managua. Priority will be given to neighborhoods or spontaneous settlements where there are good levels of community organization as well as a commitment to the environment and also to the financial sustainability of the Nicaraguan Company of Aqueducts and Sewage Systems (ENACAL) itself.
“This operation will increase the availability of water by investing in wells to be located in the south-east sectors of Managua, and also will be used to rehabilitate water networks and domestic connections that were constructed by the community, at times without adequate technical assistance -a situation that over the years has resulted in considerable water loss through leakages,” said Ruth Selma Herrera, Executive President of ENACAL.

Approximately 1,200 people attended the opening ceremony of the First Peruvian Conference on Sanitation, PERUSAN 2008. The conference, “Proposals for Sustainable Sanitation,” is an initiative led by the Ministry of Housing, Construction, and Sanitation, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of the Environment. The international cooperation agencies forming part of the Grupo Agua support this initiative through proposals for specific sanitation activities.
Minister of Housing, Construction and Sanitation Enrique Cornejo, Environmental Minister Antonio Brack, and Health Minister Oscar Ugarte led the opening ceremony.
During the ceremony, the housing minister reported that US$2.5 billion had been invested in water and sanitation projects nationwide. “Sanitation means dignity for individuals and families,” he said.

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet announced a new law that exempts low-income homeowners [of homes costing under 750 UF = inflation-linked unit, US$24,117] from paying [UF 30] potable water and sanitation connection costs.
The initiative will speed up coverage in non-urbanized areas by helping water and sanitation utilities expand their operations to areas that are not currently under their responsibility.
The government expects to grant 46,000 housing subsidies to low-income families in the country.
